MIXING LEATHER DYES

Dyeing leather is an art, not a science. Variations in materials, conditions and artist touch will have a direct effect on the result. Fiebing Leather Dyes and Most Alcohol based Dyes may be combined and mixed to achieve intermediate colors and tones. In most cases the basic rules of color mixing apply.

Common examples:
Yellow and Blue = shades of Green

Yellow and Red = shades of Orange and Red

Red and Blue = shades of deep Purple to Lavender

Red and Purple = Wine

Brown and Yellow = shades of Golden Brown and Tan

Brown and Red = shades of Maroon

Mixing of various Leather Dyes will add an additional color variation to your Leathercraft Project. Be sure to test your color mixes before dying your entire Project. Enjoy your craft.

Different kinds of leather have characteristics all their own. No two leathers will give the same results when dyed. It is suggested that you test colors and techniques on a scrap piece.

Wrap a piece of cloth (cotton) around your index finger.  Dip your finger into some dye and apply to the leather.

By blotting out excess dye on another piece of cloth you can limit the amount of dye to go on the belt and produce a shading effect.  This technique works well for dyeing embossed blanks because you can apply dye to small areas.

Leather Dye Solvent*

A thinning material for leather dyes.

Some good effects can be achieved on embossed and plain leather goods by rubbing lightly in long strokes.
